Food Fraud & Quality – Technologies & Applications

Katherine Campbell, Managing Director Australia &  Alois Schiessl Managing Director Singapore - Eurofins Technologies

Food Fraud is the deliberate and intentional substitution, addition, tampering or misrepresentation of food, food ingredients or mislabelling on food packaging for the seller's economic gain. Food Fraud is increasingly widespread and results in billions of dollars in economic loss and long-term damage to brand reputation. It can also pose a serious threat to public health.  Since the horse meat scandal broke in 2013, food authenticity and food adulteration have taken on a new level of importance with consumers and producers.  Eurofins is the world leader in food and feed authenticity testing and we have pioneered analytical technologies for food testing using innovative protocols to improve the safety and authenticity of our clients’ food products.  We will highlight some of the recent food fraud events and discuss how relevant testing technologies can be utilised to protect brand reputation and value, we will also touch on the concept of horizon scanning and how the ongoing focus and development of new technologies can be utilised to strengthen confidence for both manufacturers and consumers within the food and feed industry.

Alois & Katherine are Managing Directors of the Eurofins Technologies entities in Singapore and Australia respectively.   Alois has significant experience in the global food and feed safety market after spending the last 9 years directly involved with key industry players in the field of kit diagnostic development, manufacturing and industry adoption.  This included analytical technologies such as ELISA, LFDs , HPLC, LC-MS/MS, PCR, DNA-Sequencing, antibody development and microbiological techniques.  Katherine has recently moved from New Zealand to Australia after successfully establishing distribution channels, providing technical support and increasing market share for a range of global diagnostic testing technologies that range from rapid HACCP tools through to molecular based food pathogen testing platforms. It is with this experience, the current Eurofins Technologies product range and the current reach of the global Eurofins laboratory network they can offer a perspective on Food Fraud & Quality and the technologies available to combat this ever evolving global issue.
